Eirik is part of BAHR’s Fisheries & Aquaculture group. He is acknowledged as Norway’s leading legal expert on aquaculture and fisheries law. In addition, Eirik specialises in commercial law disciplines such as contract law, shipping law and company law. He has completed the only Norwegian PhD thesis on aquaculture law, which examines the interplay between regulatory frameworks and contracts within the industry. The thesis also addresses current and more general issues relating to contracts, shipping and insurance.
As a solicitor, Eirik has assisted in several major transactions and legal disputes within the seafood sector. Eirik has considerable experience in providing strategic advice to both companies and public authorities in the seafood sector on issues across the entire value chain. Among other things, Eirik has been engaged by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries to contribute to the drafting of the key regulations on the allocation of licences (the Salmon Allocation Regulations). In 2023, on behalf of SjømatNorge, he wrote a report on the relationship between the resource rent tax and the prohibition on retroactivity in the Constitution for use in the Parliaments deliberations on the tax: Skriftlig spørsmål – stortinget.no. Eirik has also published a major legal treatise on the Aquaculture Act and related regulations for the aquaculture industry and was the lead author of a report on the organisation of aquaculture management. Both works were used by the Aquaculture Committee.
At university, Eirik has played a central role in establishing aquaculture and fisheries law as distinct legal disciplines and has published several works that form part of the curriculum for students. In this context, he has shed light on significant legal issues facing Norwegian seafood exporters in key markets such as the US, where sales contracts intersect with various trade barriers through a book review of the prescribed course materials in International sales law at Columbia Law School and NY Law School. Eirik is also currently working as a co-author on updating the standard works on maritime law and sales law.
Eirik has experience from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security’s Legislation Department, where he, among other things, drafted the Financial Contracts Act and a key amendment to the Insurance Contracts Act. He has also contributed to the legal review of draft regulations across numerous policy areas, including the seafood sector.
Eirik further brings experience from board positions and the communications industry.
